1:1 programs across the world aim at enabling universal access to technology in schools to benefit from all the learning opportunities that technology can provide. Various approaches have been taken (1 laptop/student, large thin-clients deployments, mobile carts...) but many 1:1 projects failed to scale up after starting because of management costs and other technical or organisational issues. Let us see various approach to 1:1, including return on experiences of large educational organisations in North America. We will discuss how the concept of “Anywhere Computing” can help organisations to achieve sustainable 1:1 projects by using an universal Open Source platform (netbooks/thin clients/desktops) in schools or at home.
